Recent numbers released by iSuppli have shown that the production costs for the Xbox 360 are continuing to drop while the costs for the PlayStation 3 are remaining the same as they always have been, very high. This means that each console sold is costing Sony money while Microsoft is actually now making money per unit sold.
There is nothing new to be learned when it is stated that the PlayStation 3 has more expensive and more advanced technology compared to the Xbox 360. There is a lot of surprise though when you realize just how much more it takes to produce each one.
The numbers were released by DigiTimes and revealed that the PS3 motherboard, CPU, graphics processor, and chipset cost about $352. This is compared to the $204 which they cost on the Xbox 360. Automatically you can see that the PS3 has a far more expensive CPU and such.
The same can be said about the opical drive/disc player which is Blu-ray compared to DVD. The PS3 Blu-ray drive costs $125 for Sony compared to the DVD drive in the Xbox 360 which only costs Microsoft $19.45 in each Xbox 360. This is a huge difference. The power supply as well as hard drive is also more expensive in the PS3 as it costs $10 more than the Xbox 360. The PS3’s Bluetooth also adds $20 over the cost per unit of the Xbox 360.

Things get even higher for Sony as the PlayStation 3 is a lot harder and more expensive to put together with added components such as WiFi, card readers, etc adding $150 to the price as well as $40 to put it all together. Each Xbox 360 costs about $6 to assemble. This leads to far more high quality consoles with the PlayStation 3 but also far more expensive.
This puts the total cost of a 60GB PlayStation 3 at $840.35 with Sony only selling them for $599.99. This also puts the cost of the Xbox 360 Elite $323.20 to produce which is sold at $479.99. This is some amazing numbers so the next time you think the PlayStation 3 has a high price tag, look at how much it actually costs for Sony to make. It seems it is Microsoft who is truly ripping off the consumers.
