It's not just the PlayStation Store that's bringing in updates, it seems. Thanks to a tip from reader yoti93, we're letting you guys know that Sony Computer Entertainment has updated the Folding@Home service to version 1.31.

According to the company, this update aims to improve the software's operations for handling network errors related to the uploading and downloading of work. Quoting SCEI's official explanation:


When communication with Stanford University’s servers is unsuccessful, the application will now try an effective method of attempting to reconnect based on the specific error condition.



To avail of update 1.31, all you have to do is to restart your Folding@Home. The application will then prompt you to update to the latest version release. Drop by again in case we pick up any more updates.

New PS3 client
Sony has released an upgraded client for the PS3.  Check out Noam Rimon's  (he's the lead developer at Sony) post:

Hello,

Starting today a new version of Folding is available. This version is a minor fix to the previous 1.3 version and adds a better tuned algorithm that handles peak performance hours of Folding@home network, by acting differently to certain network errors if those occur.
It is recommended that you update to the new version by quitting the application and restarting it. Your current WU will not be damaged in any way, in-fact Folding will continue from the exact point you have stopped it.

We can already see a stabilized network activity for the last 5 days. With the new update we are certain that the network will continue to be stable for good.
At this point I would like to thank people again for being patient and continue to donate to our project while Stanford & Sony was working on the fix.

Het Guinness Book of Records heeft het distributed-computingproject Folding@home van de University of Stanford bijgeschreven als het krachtigste netwerk ter wereld, zo meldt Sony.

Het Folding@home-project heeft als doel om rekenkracht te verzamelen voor het onderzoek aan proteïnen. Door diverse driedimensionale structuren van deze stoffen te berekenen - het zogenaamde 'folden' - hoopt men meer medicijnen te vinden voor ziektes als Parkinson,Huntington, Alzheimer en diverse varianten van kanker.


De benodigde rekenkracht wordt geleverd door computers van particulieren, die ongebruikte cpu-tijd met een eenvoudig clientprogramma voor het onderzoek kunnen inzetten. De introductie van de PS3-client heeft een grote invloed op het project gehad, meldt Sony.

Doordat de Cell-processor van de PS3 zeer geschikt is voor het type berekeningen dat Folding@home uitvoert, draagt één PS3 evenveel bij als twintig gemiddelde desktops. Inmiddels werken meer dan 670.000 PlayStation 3-gebruikers mee aan Folding@home, omdat het clientprogramma standaard op de spelcomputer staat geïnstalleerd.

In juli doorbrak het project de magische grens van een petaflops aan rekenkracht. Dit is het eerste distributed-computingproject dat de petaflopsgrens bereikt, waarmee Folding@home nu dus een plek in het Guinness Book of Records heeft verworven. ZIE SIG. HIERONDER
